An Australian firm has discovered a rare mineral resource that could turn Nigeria’s economic fortunes around. The discovery of Nickel was made at Dangoma in the north-west state of Kaduna. The discovery was made by a private mining syndicate headed by a mining industry veteran, Hugh Morgan.
Nickel is used in many specific and recognizable industrial and consumer products, including stainless steel, alnico magnets, coinage, rechargeable batteries, electric guitar strings, microphone capsules, plating on plumbing fixtures, and special alloys such as permalloy, elinvar, and invar. It is used for plating and as a green tint in glass. Nickel is preeminently an alloy metal, and its chief use is in nickel steels and nickel cast iron.
According to report obtained from Premium times, the Australian firm said,
“The discovery is unusual because the nickel is found in small balls up to 3mm in diameter of a high purity in shallow soils in what could be the surface expression of a much bigger hard-rock nickel field.
“The nickel balls, rumoured to grade better than 90 per cent nickel and thought to be a world first given their widespread distribution, offer the potential for early cashflow from a simple and low-cost screening operation to fund a full assessment of the find that has exploration circles buzzing,”
The question is, will the Nigerian government accelerate the extraction of this mineral, and will the government use the proceeds of this new mineral wisely ?
Posterity will tell, but judging from history, we have a penchant for abusing every natural blessing God endows us with. We still have loads of untapped coal all over Nigeria, even though coal is a major cash earner for Australia and many European nations. We have reserves of rare Uranium, a radioactive substance used for Nuclear energy, yet our power generation is among the lowest in any developing Nation. Iron ore exist in commercial quantity, but our mighty Ajaokuta Steel plant continues to sleep and waste.
Yet, Japan with no mineral resource, is the 3rd Largest economy in the world. Economic development is not about Mineral resources, it is more about Human Resources. As long as Nigeria refuses to develop its human resources, our Natural resources will continue to provide wealth for other nations and the elite few, while the masses continue to wallow in poverty.
Even communities with billions of dollars of oil pumped right from their land, continue to live in abject poverty.
I agree that any natural resource found anywhere in Nigeria belongs to the entire Nation, but let the government take a leaf from selfless leaders of Nations like Dubai. Flushed with oil dollars, they have turned their nation from a small fishing community to the new paradise on earth. An epitome of modern tourism and luxurious hospitality, a place even Americans come to relax, with several wonders of the modern world, the Burj Khalifa, the 7-star hotel , the world island, the palm beach, etc..
More importantly, If the older generation are so hopelessly corrupt, what should the younger generation do? Should we fold our hands and bemoan our fate? Should we blame and fight the government hopelessly at every corner, or should we take our destiny in our hands and just build a new economy?
Most Englishmen that felt they were frustrated in the old world of the United Kingdom, set sail for the newly discovered land of America. They were great pioneers and they later built the biggest economy that the world has ever seen.
Even today, young men like Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, Larry page and Sergey Brin of Google, are not relying on oil wealth, or their government. They simply built their ideas into an entire economy on its own. Google today as a company is richer than many African nations. Mark Zuckerberg (Worth $33.4 Billion) alone is worth more than the nation of Mozambique ( GDP $14.7 Billion) with all its mineral resources. Sergey Brin of google with a fortune of $29.2 billion, is richer than the entire Cameroun, with a wealth index of $28.5 billion.
Do you now understand what I mean by saying that what we need to develop is our human resources even more than our natural resources. Someone can remove natural resources, but no one can remove the resources you develop inside yourself. Thus when your wealth pours out from your mind, it is inexhaustible and it will not care about the economy of your nation.
Millionaires Academy develops the innate human resources, empowering today’s youth to build an economy that is not dependent on the government. We are building tomorrow’s leaders today. We continue to search for very resourceful and ambitious young men and women to join our ranks. We are growing everyday and soon we shall prove that nation building starts with individual mental and economic empowerment. We are calling on Nigerian youths to wake up and stop looking on the government and the older generation for help. Help is here already. Stop looking for blessing from anyone, because you are the blessing.
Learn this lesson well, and you shall never beg all your life.
